Almost every project management product now calls itself an AI project management tool, so the label alone tells you little. What differs is which plan unlocks the AI, how usage is metered, and whether the AI can act on your tasks or only write text. This comparison covers eight of the best AI tools for project management as of October 2026, using each vendor’s own pricing page.
KanbanWP is one of the eight, and it is our product.
How the tools were compared
Each tool is described on the same five points, taken from our guide to AI for project management:
- Where AI is included: every plan, paid plans only, or an add-on.
- How usage is metered: credits, request limits or tokens.
- What the AI does: writing and summaries, automations, or agents that act on tasks.
- Outside agents: whether Claude, ChatGPT or another client can connect through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Cost at your team size: the per-seat price and the cheapest plan with AI.
Prices below are per user per month on annual billing unless stated, in US dollars, as listed in October 2026. Vendors change AI packaging often, so check the linked pricing page before you buy.

Asana
Asana is a work management suite with list, board, timeline and calendar views, plus portfolios and goals on higher tiers. Its AI has several parts, according to Asana’s AI page:
- AI Teammates: prebuilt agents that take on work next to your team.
- AI Studio: a no-code builder for routine steps such as intake and routing.
- Asana Dash: an assistant that surfaces priorities and routes work to an AI Teammate.
- AI Connectors and MCP: a way for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot to work with Asana from outside.
Pricing: The Personal plan is free for up to 2 seats. Starter costs $10.99 per user per month on annual billing ($13.49 monthly), and Advanced costs $24.99 ($30.49 monthly). Paid plans include Asana AI, a monthly AI Studio credit allowance per billing account, and 5 AI Teammates requests per user per month, up to an account cap. Extra AI requests are sold in packs.
Fits: organizations that coordinate work across several teams and want a managed product. Limits: AI Teammates requests are capped per user, so heavy agent use costs extra.
ClickUp
ClickUp combines tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, goals and dashboards in one workspace. Its AI, ClickUp Brain², is now included in every plan with a pooled monthly credit allowance. Credits pay for Super Agents, AI Fields, automations and image generation.
Pricing: Free Forever includes a Brain² trial with 500 credits per workspace. Core costs $9 per user per month on annual billing, with 1,000 credits per user. Business costs $17, with 1,500 credits per user and premium models. Enterprise is custom, with 3,000 credits per user. The Max plan costs $100 per user and adds MCP connections, unlimited autopilot agents and 10,000 credits per user. Extra credits cost $10 per 10,000.
Fits: teams that want one configurable app and are willing to spend time on setup. Limits: the plan structure is complex, and MCP connections are listed only on Max.
monday.com
monday.com is built around customizable boards, automations and dashboards. Its AI includes an AI assistant called Sidekick, an agent builder, AI columns, a meeting notetaker and an AI workflow builder. The monday.com AI page says it connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or any MCP-connected tool.
Pricing: The Free plan allows up to 2 seats and 3 boards, and it has no AI. AI starts on Basic at $9 per seat per month on annual billing, with 1,000 AI credits per month. Standard costs $12 with 2,000 credits and adds timeline, Gantt and calendar views. Pro costs $19 with 3,000 credits and adds the AI workflow builder and time tracking. Enterprise has custom pricing and custom credits.
Fits: teams that want visual boards, a large template library and agents built without code. Limits: AI credits are a fixed monthly allowance per plan, so heavy agent use can run out before the month ends.
Notion
Notion combines pages, wikis and databases. A database can show tasks as a board, with subtasks, dependencies and custom properties on every plan.
Pricing: Free and Plus ($10 per seat per month on annual billing) include only a trial of Notion AI. The Business plan, at $20 per seat per month, includes Notion Agent, Custom Agents, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search. It comes with 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per seat each month, and admins can buy more credits. Enterprise adds zero data retention with the AI model providers.
Fits: teams whose projects live next to their documentation. Limits: full AI needs Business, and you design the project structure yourself.
Jira
Jira is Atlassian’s tool for software teams, with backlogs, sprints, boards, timelines and detailed workflows. Its AI is Atlassian Rovo, which adds agents in Jira, Rovo Studio and a Rovo MCP Server.
Pricing: The Free plan covers up to 10 users and has no Rovo credits. The pricing page lists Standard from $8.48 per user per month with 25 Rovo credits per user, Premium from $15.56 with 70 credits, and Enterprise with 150 credits. The per-user price depends on team size.
Fits: engineering teams that run sprints with formal processes. Limits: Rovo is not on the Free plan, and Jira workflows take time to configure.
Trello
Trello is a simple board tool, and it is also an Atlassian product. Its AI is included from the Standard plan up:
- AI quick capture: turns emails, Slack and Teams messages into to-dos.
- AI summarization: drafts and corrects card descriptions and comments.
- AI organization: generates checklists, adds due dates, merges cards and schedules focus blocks.
- AI-generated boards: builds a board with lists and cards from a goal you describe.
Pricing: The Free plan allows up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, without AI. Standard costs $5 per user per month on annual billing ($6 monthly). Premium costs $10 ($12.50 monthly) and adds calendar, timeline, table, dashboard and map views. Enterprise is listed at $17.50 per user per month, billed annually.
Fits: small teams that want the simplest board with AI for routine card work. Limits: advanced views need Premium. For other options, see the best Trello alternatives for 2027.
Motion
Motion combines tasks, projects, a calendar, docs and meeting notes. In Motion, AI project management centers on scheduling: an AI planner prioritizes tasks and places them on your calendar as time blocks, then re-plans as work changes. Motion warns you when a task is at risk of missing its deadline, and it can generate a project with tasks, deadlines and assignees from a description.
Pricing: Motion has no free plan, only a free trial. For teams, Pro AI costs $19 per seat per month and Business AI costs $29 on annual billing. For individuals, the same plans cost $29 and $39 per month. Pro AI includes 7,500 AI credits and Business AI includes 15,000. Business AI also adds capacity planning, Gantt charts and time tracking.
Fits: people and small teams who want AI to decide when work gets done. Limits: it is a paid product from day one, and auto-scheduling only helps if you keep your calendar and task durations accurate.
KanbanWP
KanbanWP is a free WordPress plugin that adds kanban boards to your admin. It has Kanban, List, Table, Calendar, Timeline and My Tasks views, subtasks, dependencies, WIP limits, reports and a client portal. Its AI runs on your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or OpenAI-compatible API key. The features are:
- text to tasks, task breakdown and task summary
- post outline, post draft and post SEO for editorial work
- daily and weekly board summaries and client updates
- generate board, and a command feature for short instructions such as “move” or “assign”
Plugin admins choose which WordPress roles can use AI and set a monthly token cap that applies to each user. The AI Usage screen shows each user’s tokens this month and the 100 most recent AI calls. A built-in MCP server lets agents such as Claude, Cursor and Codex list boards, create, update and move tasks, and add comments. Details are in the AI documentation and the MCP documentation.
Pricing: the plugin is free, with no seats. You pay your AI provider for the tokens you use, at that provider’s rates. Bring your own AI key explains how.
Fits: agencies, publishers and teams that already work in WordPress and want boards and AI without per-seat fees. Limits:
- In version 1.0.1, the AI features are called through the REST API, and the board screen has no AI buttons yet.
- It needs a WordPress site, and you handle hosting and backups.
- It has no sprint object, so formal sprint reporting is better in Jira.
- There is no mobile app, though the board works on small screens.
What AI-powered project management software costs a team of 10
This table shows the yearly cost for 10 people on the cheapest plan of each tool that includes its AI, using the annual prices above:
| Tool and plan | Yearly cost for 10 users | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Trello Standard | $600 | AI capture, summaries, organization and board generation |
| ClickUp Core | $1,080 | 1,000 pooled credits per user each month |
| monday.com Basic | $1,080 | 1,000 AI credits each month |
| Asana Starter | $1,318.80 | Asana AI, AI Studio credits, 5 AI Teammates requests per user each month |
| Motion Pro AI (teams) | $2,280 | 7,500 AI credits |
| Notion Business | $2,400 | Notion Agent, Custom Agents, 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits per seat each month |
| KanbanWP | $0 for the plugin | Billed per token by your AI provider |
Jira is left out because its per-user price changes with team size. Usage beyond each allowance costs extra with most vendors, for example ClickUp’s $10 per 10,000 credits.
