Board templates

See the stages and labels that each KanbanWP board template creates, and how to pick the one that fits your editorial, client, sales or bug workflow.

A template decides which stages and labels a new board starts with. You choose one in the Template dropdown of the Create a board form. After the board exists you can change its labels freely, and the template name stays as a badge in the board header.

The five templates

Editorial

For planning and publishing content.

  • Stages: Ideas, Drafting, In Review, Scheduled, Published.
  • Labels: Article, Video, Newsletter.

Tasks can be linked to WordPress posts, so this template pairs well with WordPress posts.

Client

For work that a client reviews and approves.

  • Stages: Backlog, In Progress, In Review, Approved, Done.
  • Labels: Feedback, Revision, Approved.

Sales

For a lead pipeline.

  • Stages: Lead, Contacted, Proposal, Negotiation, Won, Lost.
  • Labels: Hot, Warm, Cold.

Bugs

For triage and fixing issues.

  • Stages: New, Triaged, In Progress, In QA, Resolved.
  • Labels: Critical, Minor, Enhancement.

Blank

A minimal starting point.

  • Stages: To Do, Doing, Done.
  • Labels: High Priority, Low Priority.

How the stages are set up

Each stage gets a colour, which shows as a coloured edge on the stage header and as the bar colour in the Timeline view. The stages are created in the order listed above. If you set a Default WIP limit in KanbanWP > Settings, every stage created from a template starts with that limit. The default is 0, which means no limit. See WIP limits.

Choosing a default template

The Default board template setting in KanbanWP > Settings controls which template is the starting choice for new boards when none is specified. It is Blank unless you change it.

Changing stages later

Templates are only a starting point. Stages are stored per board, so changing one board never affects another. Duplicating a board copies its stages exactly, which is a handy way to make your own reusable template. See Archiving and duplicating.
